Busting dietary myths about COVID-19
In earlier centuries, myths were folk tales which people fictionalised for entertainment purposes. However, today in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, they have become a means of driving people away from the facts. The wide-spread claims on social media about miracle foods and how they can cure COVID-19 are far from the truth.
So, let’s delve into the reality behind these myths and reconsider your diet plans.
Myth 1: Eating garlic prevents COVID-19
Fact: Garlic has anti-microbial properties which may be useful to keep you healthy. But consuming garlic doesn’t prevent you from the Coronavirus disease. (Source: WHO)

Myth 4: Drinking methanol, ethanol or bleach can prevent and cure the virus

Myth 5: Food will infect me
Fact: COVID-19 is a respiratory illness. Currently, there is no evidence whether a particular food item or food packaging can infect you. Wash your hands before and after handling the food package and before eating. Moreover, the virus cannot multiply in the food as it needs a host in the form of a human being to survive. (Source: WHO)
Myth 6: Superfoods diet prevents COVID-19
Fact: Certain diets like ketogenic diet or foods like garlic, lemon or mushrooms do help reinforce the immune system. Garlic is rich in concentration of sulphur-containing compounds such as allicin. Additionally, lemon is rich in Vitamin C and mushroom decreases the inflammation in your stomach while improving immune cell functionality. All these qualities make these foods perfect immune boosters.
However, they don’t prevent you from COVID-19 infection or even limit the contagion risk. (Source: Journal of Population Therapeutics& Clinical Pharmacology)
