Watching your little one grow up is a real joy..

Time flies, as your once tiny toddler turns into a budding youth! But do you find something wrong in this beautiful path to adulthood? Do you feel your kid's becoming a tad too healthy? Do you find the little one gasping for breath and out of stamina at the slightest exertion? Do you hear the alarm bells ringing in your head?

Well, the earlier it rings, the better! Your child is getting obese. Obesity is no longer a disease of adults. It has spread its wings to the young ones too.

What is childhood obesity?

Childhood obesity is a medical condition that is predominantly seen among children and adolescents. Obese children usually weight more than the normal weight according to their age and height.

Obese children are at a high risk of becoming obese adults.

Globally, the prevalence of obesity in children under 5 years is estimated to be about 41 million. It is increasing at an alarming rate by the day.

What are the causes of obesity in children?

  • The main cause of obesity in children is their lifestyle, although genetics and hormones also play a role in accumulating extra fat on their bodies.
  • Recent research has shown that changes in the hormones responsible for digestion alter the signals that let you know that you are full, resulting in the child eating more than he can handle, leading to accumulation of fat in the body.
  • Children, whose parents are obese tend to be at a higher risk of becoming obese in early childhood, or puberty.
  • Lack of physical activity, intake of junk, oily and spicy foods and untimely eating habits form the major reasons for childhood obesity.
  • Stress is another major cause of obesity in children. Some children are unable to handle stressful situations at school like coping with studies or excessive parental pressures at home and tend to overeat thus putting on excessive weight.
  • Indulging in easily available foods that are high in preservatives and calories to cut or save the time of cooking can also lead to your child becoming obese.

How is childhood obesity diagnosed?

BMI or Body Mass Index provides a guideline of weight in relation to height and age, is considered an accepted measure of overweight and obesity.

Growth charts and other investigations can also be done to rule out the underlying causes of obesity in children.

Why is Childhood Obesity harmful?

  • Childhood obesity is an important issue to be addressed, as an obese child will be at a higher risk of facing problems of adulthood prematurely.
  • Obesity in childhood can cause orthopedic complications like abnormal bone growth, degenerative diseases and pain.
  • The child becomes more prone to developing disorders like hypertension, cardiac disorders, thyroid disorders, metabolic disorders, high cholesterol levels, and diabetes mellitus.
  • More importantly, obesity causes a lot of psychological issues for the childlike being bullied in school, being teased around leading to low self-esteem that can eventually lead to problems like depression. Obese children tend to be more anxious and lacking in social skills than a normal-weight child. These feelings can lead to disruptive behaviour or social withdrawal. In extreme cases, the child may develop suicidal tendencies.
  • Obese children can also develop breathing difficulties or disorders like asthma and allergies.
  • Sleep disorders like sleep apnoea, a disorder characterised by stopping of breath during sleep is also common in obese children.

How to manage childhood obesity?

The first step to managing childhood obesity is understanding the problem and the underlying implications. Once the issue is understood, lifestyle modifications play the most important role in the correction of obesity.

The child's diet needs to be monitored as per the age and requirement. Here’s how:

  • Measure portions of meals of your child.
  • Limit eating out, and whenever you do motivate your child to make healthy choices.
  • Limit your child's sweet intake or artificially flavoured preservative rich foods.
  • Make sure your child keeps regular meal and sleep timings thereby ensuring an adequate amount of rest.
  • Encourage your child to go out and play at least for an hour instead of watching TV or playing indoor games on mobile or laptops. Explain the importance of the physical activity to the child and the role it plays in keeping good health.
  • Motivate your child to indulge in a hobby of interest, thereby bringing about a healthy psychological and physical state of mind and body.
  • Periodic monitoring of the child's BMI helps track the health status of the child. An increase in BMI can indicate a risk of becoming overweight or obese.
  • Incase the obesity is due to an underlying disorder, the disorder needs to be handled to bring out a change in the weight.

Obesity treatment

While conventional medications involve heavy doses and serious side-effects, alternative therapies like homeopathy help treat the underlying cause of obesity more effectively and permanently.

Homeopathy goes to the root cause, treats the person as a whole, thereby trying to correct both the physical and psychological problem caused due to obesity in children.

Medications like Fucus Ver, Calc Carb, Bartya Carb when given in the right dose and repetition help improve the metabolism of child thereby helping child maintain good health.

These medications though need to be taken under expert medical guidance and supervision. Do not self-medicate.
