Common cold is an infection of the nose and throat. It is usually a viral infection which is generally harmless. A person suffering from common cold would generally recover in a week or 10days. Intensity of the symptoms varies in individuals depending on their immune systems. For example a person who smokes may take longer time to recover than a person who is a non-smoker. Symptoms appear in a day or two after being exposed to the virus. Runny nose, stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, chest congestion, low grade fever, body ache, headache, malaise are the most common symptoms of common cold. Severity and intensity varies person to person though. Generally the discharge is transparent but when it becomes yellow or green, then it’s an indicator of bacterial infection. It affects all age groups especially children.

Rhinovirus is the most common culprit which causes common cold. It enters your body through your mouth, eyes and nose. The virus is spread from person to person through droplet infection when someone suffering from common cold sneezes or coughs on a not infected person or when you share objects such as utensils, towels, toys or telephones with an infected person or if you have touched an infected area and then touch your eyes, mouth or nose, then you are likely to catch cold.
