No matter how beautiful you look, if your body has a single unpleasant mark or rash, it may become a cause of worry for you. Do you have a rash with red, purple, or bluish lesions that itch and spreads? If yes, you may have lichen planus. It is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease. It causes thin, white, patchy areas of skin that can be painful, tear easily, and itch. This disease is triggered by the immune system in response to stress, allergens, or a viral infection. It may affect the skin, scalp, and nails, as well as the mouth and the genitals. It occurs in 0.1% to 4% of the general population. (Source: American Academy of Family Physicians)

Lichen planus signs and symptoms

The first sign might be the appearance of a reticular rash on the wrist or legs. Nevertheless, it can start anywhere on the body. Other indications of this skin condition include:

  • The appearance of purplish-colored lesions or bumps
  • The appearance of whitish-blue colored fluid-filled blisters or lesions that burst and scab over
  • Thin white lines that make a web-like appearance over a red rash of small lesions
  • Moderate to severe itching on skin rashes
  • The appearance of the focal thickening of the granular layer of the epidermis in the mouth accompanied by a burning sensation and changes in taste
  • Nails that have a white chalky appearance or are splitting
  • Itching and pain on the scalp accompanied by a rash
  • An odd odour coming from a rash, even after cleansing

Lichen Planus Signs & Symptoms

Foods to avoid with lichen planus

Avoid certain foods to help lessen or prevent painful lichen planus signs and symptoms.

  • Crispy foods:

Crispy foods can aggravate lichen planus, particularly if there are open sores. Avoid eating toast, crusty bread, chips, crispy cookies, and similar crunchy foods. You can soften crispy cereals with milk.

  • Caffeinated drinks:

Caffeinated beverages also seem to aggravate lichen planus. Limit your consumption of coffee, black or green tea, colas, and other soft drinks that comprise caffeine.

  • Spicy, acidic, and citrus foods:

Spicy, acidic, and citrus foods and beverages can aggravate lichen planus. You may need to avoid eating foods made with chili peppers, curry, large amounts of ginger or garlic, or other spicy dishes. Tomato and tomato products may cause problems. Similar is the case with lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits.
