How do you decide which shampoo and conditioner to buy? Does a brand's ad help you make the decision or do you go by the ingredient list? It is a good idea to read the labels of hair care products before making your decision. At least, it is safer than blindly following reviews or ads.

Why do we say this? Because most commercial hair products have harmful chemicals present in large amounts. And their toxicity level is not limited to hair health; they can also have life-threatening dangers.

To identify such harmful ingredients in shampoos and conditioners, we spoke to our trichologists and dermatologists and have come up with a complete list.

Harmful ingredients in hair products to avoid

What are the harmful ingredients in hair products?

  • Eat protein-rich food:

Eat fish, soy, lean meat, and other protein-rich food to help with hair growth and strength.

  • Sulfates:

Sulfates are used to clean excess sebum and dirt on the scalp. They are used as surfactants (for easy application purposes) in your normal shampoos for hair. These surfactants like SLES (sodium Laureth sulfate), SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), and ammonium lauryl sulfate are damaging to the hair.

They can cause allergic reactions to your scalp and may even cause frizzy hair. Besides, they can be hormone disruptors when used for a longer period.

  • Parabens:

Manufacturers add preservatives called parabens to increase the shelf life of hair care products. These parabens prevent bacteria from growing in your hair products. Parabens (Butyl, propyl, and ethyl parabens) are known to mimic the function of the hormone estrogen (a female hormone responsible for reproductive functions) and can increase the risk of breast cancer.

  • Alcohol:

Alcohol used in hair care products can make your hair extremely dry.Steer clear alcohols like propanol and isopropyl alcohol. Alcohols are used as thickening agents in shampoos. This can cause brittleness of hair and hair loss.

  • Fragrances:

Haircare brands often do not reveal the exact ingredients and put them all in one category - perfume or fragrances. These fragrances are made synthetically with a combination of a variety of toxic chemicals.

Synthetic fragrances may cause reproductive issues, cancers, or asthma attacks. Some fragrances can affect the scalp and cause hair loss.

  • Selenium sulfide:

Selenium sulfide is a proven carcinogen (cancer-causing compound). Read the ingredients of your anti-dandruff shampoos to stay away from selenium sulfide.

  • Eat protein-rich food:

Eat fish, soy, lean meat, and other protein-rich food to help with hair growth and strength.

Make sure you buy from brands that disclose the full list of ingredients on the website or labels. Check possible irritants whenever you buy shampoos and conditioners.

Homeopathy treatment for hair problems

Homeopathy focuses not just on hair care treatment but also on the root of the problem. Homeopathy medicines promote healthy hair growth and reduce the intensity of hair fall and hair thinning. The field of homeopathy extends beyond the physical symptoms to address the underlying conditions of mental stress, anxiety, and depression. It offers a safe, natural, and effective solution for hair problems with no toxic effects.

Homeopathic treatment helps to moisturize the scalp by stimulating the oil glands and encouraging moisture retention. Homeopathic hair fall treatment also helps to reduce dryness with the right amount of nourishment and make them healthy. The problems of dandruff and hair fall can also be treated with homeopathic treatment without causing side effects.

According to a case study published in ResearchGate, an 11-year-old boy with extensive alopecia areata had multiple bald patches and the condition was growing. The boy was treated with individualized homeopathic remedies. The homeopathic treatment resulted in significant improvement with the complete disappearance of the bald patches and no recurrence of the condition.
