Home Remedies For Itchy Scalp

There are many reasons why your scalp becomes dry and itchy. Moisturize your scalp to prevent dry and itchy scalp.

There are a handful of home remedies that you can try if you have an itchy scalp:

  1. Coconut oil:

    Coconut oil has anti-fungal properties. It helps to relieve an itchy scalp immediately and also gives excellent luster to your hair.

    How to apply:

    • Heat the coconut oil.
    • Ensure it is lukewarm, not very hot.
    • Dip a cotton ball in coconut oil and apply it generously on the scalp by making small partitions.
    • Massage your scalp with your fingertips.
    • You can keep it overnight or for 30 minutes.
    • Ensure you use a mild shampoo and lukewarm water to wash your scalp.
    • Apply it a minimum of twice a week to get good results.

    Tip: Mix 10-20 drops of castor oil. It will enhance the action.

  2. Baking soda:

    Baking soda prevents hair fall and the itchiness of the scalp. Rich in anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, it can help to kill the microorganisms which cause an itchy scalp. It also balances the pH level of the scalp.

    How to apply:

    • Make a thick paste of baking soda. 
    • Take two tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl and add water gradually.
    • Apply it on your scalp with your finger or brush.
    • Leave it on for 15 minutes.
    • Wash your scalp by using a mild shampoo and lukewarm water.
    • You can use it once every fifteen days. 

    Tip: Do not use it regularly.

  3. Lemon juice:

    It is a very common remedy for hair disease. Lemon juice is rich in citric acid, which can quickly clear dirt and dead cells accumulated on the scalp, which can cause dandruff.

    How to apply:

    • Take lemon juice or cut the lemon in half.
    • You can use lemon juice with the help of a cotton ball, or you can directly apply the half-cut lemon to the scalp.
    • Once applied, leave it for 10 minutes, then wash with a mild shampoo and room temperature water.
    • Use once a week for better results.

    Tip: If you scratch your scalp a lot, then the lemon juice can cause mild irritation. In that case, you can mix it with coconut oil and use it.

  4. Aloe vera:

    Aloe vera gel is known for its cooling and soothing properties. It moisturizes your scalp and keeps the itch at bay. It also helps to heal the minor scratches and cuts which may have been caused due to vigorous itching. It is practical to treat dandruff as well.

    How to apply:

    • You can use the gel available in the market (ensure it does not have chemicals), or in case you have an aloe vera plant at home, you can remove the gel from the fresh aloe leaf.
    • Apply this gel for 15 to 20 minutes, then wash with cold or lukewarm water.
    • You can repeat it twice or thrice a week. 

    Tip: Mix Vit E Oil for better results.

  5. Onion:

    Onions are also a very commonly used remedy for hair infections. Onions have antimicrobial qualities. It helps to prevent dandruff and a flaky scalp.

    How to apply:

    • Take one big onion. You can grate or churn it in a mixer.
    • Collect the onion juice in one bowl.
    • Apply the onion juice with the help of a cotton ball.
    • Leave it on for 20 minutes, and then wash with mild shampoo and lukewarm water.
    • Apply it once a week and see the difference!

    Tip: Once you are finish applying, cover your scalp as it can be a little smelly

  6. Apple cider vinegar:

    Apple cider vinegar is a famous home remedy for an itchy scalp as it is known to control dandruff. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can keep microbes at bay. It not only soothes the scalp but also makes it difficult for bacteria and fungi to grow.

    How to apply:

    • Mix apple cider vinegar and water in the ratio of 1:4.
    • Pour the mixture onto your scalp and hair evenly.
    • Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse it off.

    Tip: Even if you do not have an itchy scalp, you can use it to get shiny locks. Apply it after shampooing and conditioning.

  7. Banana and avocado:

    Bananas and avocados are known for their moisturizing properties. Avocados are rich in biotin, and bananas are rich in silica. When combined, they become rich in antioxidants and help to prevent itchy scalp.

    How to apply:

    • Take one banana and an avocado.
    • Mix it in a blender until it becomes like a smoothie.
    • Apply it on your scalp and the hair.
    • Leave it on for 30 minutes, and then wash your scalp with lukewarm water. 

    Tip: You can mix banana with an egg in case you do not have avocado.

  8. Choose a better diet:

    If your diet is not proper, home remedies can help you superficially. Ensure you have food rich in Zinc, Vitamin B, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Folic Acid, Iron, and Protein. Eat green leafy vegetables, nuts, dairy products to get all these nutrients from your diet.
