Alopecia is an umbrella term for conditions associated with hair loss, has various causes and is often treatable. Just like the skin, hair is also present all over the body. The thickness of hair varies all over the body. The thickest and most visible growth is on the head of all humans. Hair loss whether it is in men or women can not only affect just your scalp but your entire body. It can be a result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or medications. Anyone can experience hair loss. Baldness refers to hair loss from your scalp. Before pursuing any hair loss treatment, talk with an expert and rule out the Alopecia causes of your hair loss and know the possible treatment options.

Causes of Alopecia:-

  1. Positive Family History (Hereditary): Even one relative on either side of the parent is sufficient to give you a positive genetic history. Hair loss caused due to hereditary factor is known as AGA or Androgenetic Alopecia. Hairloss is primarily a result of excess male hormone (testosterone). Sounds a little technical but put simply, Testosterone + 5 Alpha Reductase (an enzyme) gets converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a major cause of hairloss in men. DHT reduces the growing phase and extends the resting phase of hair. This results in patterned baldness in males.
  2. Stress:  50% of are happiness is determined by our genes, 10% by our life circumstances and 40% by our daily activities. Happiness adds a bright shiny look to our overall confidence and also behavior. Stress has just the opposite effect. Our day to day life too has its allocation of stress: marital, financial and work stress. If human would not have the power to return to the original state after suffering of illness or depression or any adversities of life then stress would have probably knocked us out or made us dead. Chronic stress can cause substantial damage to your hair sometimes leading to permanent baldness.
  3. Consumption of Certain Conventional Medicines: Certain conventional medicines used for treating high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, depression, anxiety, sleeping problems, thyroid diseases are known to cause hair loss. These medicines disrupt the hair cycle and shorten the growing phase of hair causing the hair to go into a resting phase and fall out prematurely.
  4. Chemical Treatments: Frequent usage of hair dyes, perming, straightening damage the hair shaft and make the hair weak. One good option is using a colour or dye with no ammonia.
  5. Nutritional Deficiency: Protein, iron, vitamin B12, folic acid and biotin. Hair follicles contain ferritin- the protein that stores iron. Whenever there is iron-deficiency in the body, ferritin from the hair follicles is moved and used up for more essential body functions, lack of ferritin in the hair follicles affects the hair’s ability to grow. A low zinc level in the body is another cause of hair fragility, weakness and breakage that is often overlooked. Zinc deficiency can affect the hair on your scalp as well as the eyebrows and eyelashes.
  6. Habits: Smoking and Alcohol are known to accelerate hair thinning.
  7. Sleep Disturbances: Disturbed sleep and Insomnia is a known triggering factor for hair loss.

Homeopathic treatment is an ideal treatment for hair/ scalp problems for the following reasons:

  1. Homeopathy is free from any side-effects. Alopecia treatment in homeopathy reduces hairloss and they also protect the body from harmful side-effects (such as decreased libido, ejaculation problems) that are common with conventional drugs.
  2. With patchy hair loss (non-scarring alopecia areata) homeopathy has always been the first choice of treatment by most patients. Homeopathy helps to slow down the progression of the bald patches and fill them up with new hair. A complete recovery is possible in most cases with homeopathy.
  3. Recurrence of patchy hair loss (alopecia areata) in patients who are taking homeopathic medicine is just 9.1%, whereas it was as high as 50% in patients who took conventional treatment for the disorder.
  4. Homeopathic remedies such as Thuja Occidentalis or Sabal Serrulata have been used for treating hairloss in homeopathy since 100 years. International clinical studies have proven that the two homeopathic remedies cited natural DHT-inhibitor (hormone responsible for causing thinning of hair), i.e. they can control hairloss caused by DHT without side-effects.
  5. Hair lotions available in market to control hair loss are very high in chemicals and can cause chemical burns on the scalp skin leading to permanent hairloss and scars in the affected areas. Homeopathy has no such side-effects as the medicines are oral medicines.
  6. Anti-dandruff shampoos are the only solution available to control dandruff. Homeopathy has specific medicines for a particular type of dandruff and also takes care that it does not recur.
  7. Homeopathy is a holistic medicine and treats the patient as well as the pathology.  Hence PCOS and Hair loss can be simultaneously treated in Homoeopathy without having 10 different medicines unlike conventional medicines.
  8. Stress causes hormonal disturbances in the body like thyroid problems/ PCOS which are known to cause hairloss and is very effectively treated with homeopathy.
  9. Homeopathic medicine being natural help to deal with hairloss in cancer patients caused because of the side-effects of conventional cancer treatments by anti-doting the harmful effects of cancer treatments and makes the journey through the treatment comfortable.
  10. Homeopathy is a mind-body medicine. Homeopathy treats not only the physical complaints, but also targets the mind and gently restores mind-body equilibrium- thus it treats the patient as a whole. This makes homeopathy an excellent solution for hair problems related to the mind such as stress related patchy hairloss (alopecia areata), hair pulling disorder (trichotillomania), or stress-induced massive hair shedding.
