Vitiligo
May 20, 2021 , Last updated: September 12, 2024

Vitiligo causes the skin to lose its natural colour. This is called loss of pigment or depigmentation which causes patches of lighter skin to appear. Some people develop a few vitiligo patches. Others lose much more skin colour. It affects 2-3% of people around the world. (Source: Research Gate).

Symptoms of vitiligo

You can lose pigment anywhere on your body, including your:

  • Skin
  • Hair (scalp, eyebrow, eyelash, beard)
  • Eyes
  • Mouth (inside)
  • Genitals

Types of vitiligo

The two common types of vitiligo based on the distribution of lesions are as under.

  • Segmental vitiligo: This type of vitiligo affects only one side of the body and lesions do not expand with time.
  • Non-segmental vitiligo: Hypopigmented lesions of vitiligo affect both sides of the body without any specific differentiation. Lesions expand with time.

Causes of vitiligo

Vitiligo skin develops when the cells called melanocytes malfunction or die. These cells give our skin and hair colour. Non-segmental vitiligo might be an autoimmune disease that develops when the immune system mistakes melanocytes as foreign elements. It will attack and kill these cells. Segmental vitiligo seems to develop when something in the body’s nervous system goes awry. (Source: American Academy of Dermatology Association)

Diagnosis of vitiligo skin disease

Diagnosing vitiligo depends on several aspects:

  • The location of the patches on your body
  • How noticeable the vitiligo patches are
  • Your age
  • Family history

You might wonder “why me” a thousand times and disregard doing anything about vitiligo spots. But you should consult a doctor and when you do, it might be helpful to:

  • Note down questions before you go to help you feel in control of the consultation and to make sure your concerns are dealt with.
  • Learning about vitiligo disease will help you in making the right decision on vitiligo treatment.

Once you are diagnosed, it is important to accept the condition for a positive treatment outcome.
