"Pitter-patter, pitter-patter," can you hear the rain?

"Pitter-patter, pitter-patter," on the window pane.

"Pitter-patter, pitter-patter," let's go out to play.

Here come the rain and kids are all set to go out, enjoy the rain, jump in mud puddles, and float paper boats in the water. Are you ready to welcome them home drenched in water from head to toe?

I'm sure you did the same things when you were growing up. But, you are a parent now and you are aware that the monsoon weather no matter how enticing, does pose as a potent threat to your child’s health. While you can’t stop them enjoying the monsoon weather, you can definitely take extra care to protect your child from developing any disease.

5 Tips to protect children from falling ill during monsoon:

  1. Boost your child’s immunity – Catch the cold before it catches your kid! Monsoon is the season for cold, flu, and other water-borne diseases. It’s better to feed your kid with immunity-boosting foods like citrus fruits (oranges, lemon, mosami), yogurt, almonds, berries (strawberry, raspberry), chicken or vegetable soup, and golden (turmeric) milk. Homeopathy also helps boost your child’s immunity from within and protect them against infections.
  2. Home ‘safe’ home – Keep your house clean and dry to avoid attracting insects. Take some steps to clean damp walls as they attract mould and fungus, which can cause asthma and breathing trouble among children. Dirty footwear should be removed before entering the house. You can use antiseptic liquids mixed in water for cleaning floors.
  3. Dry them ASAP – Does your child stay back home if you tell him “Honey, don’t go outside its raining.” Not at all! He will be the first one to go outside and enjoy the rain. Therefore, towel-dry them as soon as they come home. Bathe them with lukewarm water to prevent against cold, cough and other infectious. You can add a few drops of antiseptic liquid in the bathing water.
  4. No outside food – Love ‘maa ke haath ka khana’? Of course, who doesn’t? But kids are kids - they do tantrums in having homemade food. As parents you know eating outside can lead to food infections or stomach troubles during monsoon. Therefore, get creative in the kitchen, make their favorite street foods at home, and present in an interesting manner.
  5. Keep off the Mosquitoes – Mosquito bites can cause malaria and dengue. Prevent that by not allowing stagnant water near your house or residential colony. Use mosquito net for your child and fumigate your home with citronella oil, camphor, clove or neem leaves; they are natural effective mosquito repellents.

A little care should see your child enjoying the rainy season disease-free.
