Skincare routine for different skin types
Healthy skin is simply not a matter of good DNA or genes. Your daily lifestyle and choices have a big impact on what you see in the mirror. Each day we’re bombarded by hyped marketing for various skin care and cosmetic products. There is no limit to the number of social media influencers and other beauty gurus extending their skin care advice.
Let’s be honest, the importance of a customized skin care routine is indisputable. People have different types of skin which need different kinds of care. A lot of factors both physical and psychological affect our skin’s health and definitely explain why our skin’s requirements are not the same as others.
Did you know that our skin has five types: normal, sensitive, dry, oily and combination (both oily and dry skin)? These help us determine and choose the right skin care routine specific to the type.
To build the perfect skin care routine, it is imperative to know your skin type.
-
Normal Skin:
This skin type is neither too dry nor too oily and has regular texture. It has been widely referred to as well-balanced skin.
-
Sensitive skin:
This type of skin is more prone to react to stimuli and is fragile. This is usually accompanied by feelings of discomfort, such as heat, tightness, redness or itching. Sensitive skin easily loses its protective function, making it prone to infection from microorganisms and irritant substances. This further increases the chances of severe skin problems.
-
Dry Skin:
In many cases, dry skin is caused by external factors such as the weather, low humidity, low moisture etc. and is usually temporary. However, for some people, it may occur more often. Dry skin can crack, leaving it more exposed to bacteria, resulting in skin disorders such as Eczema.
-
Oily Skin:
Oily skin has a porous, humid and bright appearance and is caused by excessive fat production by the sebaceous glands. It is usually determined by genetic and/or hormonal causes. It is more common in adolescents and young people under the age of 30 years. This type of skin is usually related with the occurrence of Acne.
-
Combination Skin:
This type of skin presents characteristics of both dry and oily skin. This is a result of a dissimilar distribution of sebaceous and sweat-glands.
Once you determine the type of skin it is recommended to keep the following things in mind (3 golden rules):
-
Cleansing:
Normal/combination Skin:
It is important to know which soap or cleansing medium suits you. Avoid grabbing any soap in the shower or at the sink to wash your face. Apply a gentle cleanser or soap and rinse with plenty of warm water, then pat dry.
Dry Skin:
For this skin type, it is recommended to use a gentle cleanser that doesn't contain alcohol or fragrances. These ingredients can dry your skin even more. Gently wash your skin, rinse with warm water and avoid the use of hot water. Using hot water can remove the natural oils from your face and also damages your skin cells. It is also advised to exfoliate once a week to get rid of flaky skin cells.
Oily Skin:
Use an oil-free cleanser to wash your skin/ face. Rinse with warm water and remember not to over rinse it as it may remove the natural oils off your skin.
Sensitive Skin:
Excessive exfoliating may irritate sensitive skin. Avoid using products that have alcohol, soap, acid, or fragrance.
-
Moisturize:
Apply moisturizer while your skin is damp, preferably just after the shower. This may help seal in moisture. In case of oily skin, apply lightweight moisturizers that are oil-free, to avoid blockage of pores.
-
Apply Sunscreen:
It is recommended to use sunscreens that provide broad-spectrum protection with an SPF of at least 30.

Gone are the days, when a generic skin regimen was prescribed to anyone and everyone regardless of their concerns. Effective skin care is all about tailoring regimes to fit individual needs, rather than relying on the age-old traditional methods. A generic approach simply leads to generic results.
