Shriya, a 24-year-old college-going girl, was fed up with trying different acne treatments and still see those ugly spots on her skin! At least 25 times a day, she used to see herself in the mirror only to feel bad about her looks. She tried high-end skin products, spent a lot of time and energy searching for acne solutions.

You would be surprised to know the reason why her acne was getting worse instead of getting better. She rarely washed her pillowcases and hence all the dirt from her hair and bed clogged her skin pores, giving rise to acne.

There are a lot many things that can cause or trigger your acne problem. Here are a few:

  1. Workouts

Activities, where heat is trapped inside a room and sweat, can build-up leads to major breakouts of acne. Therefore, always take a shower after workouts. Skipping the shower right after working out or not washing your face allows the mixture of makeup, dirt, bacteria, oil, and sweat to find a nice little home in your pores and cause breakouts of acne. If you can’t take shower, use a facial wipe to clear away any pore-clogging oil and bacteria on your skin.

  1. Using too much makeup

When you put too much makeup onto your skin it leads to more blocked pores which leads to worsening of acne. Stick to clean, non-oily products with SPF 50 for UV protection. Always wash your face at the end of the day. Remove your makeup with a cleanser not with wet wipes since wet wipes don’t remove makeup completely.

  1. Your diet could be the source of your acne

A diet high in processed food and refined carbs may lead to acne. Refined sugar, salt, white bread, and white pasta, along with crackers, cake, and foods high on the glycemic index may increase the development and severity of acne breakouts.

  1. Touching out pimple every time

Picking pimples can lead to scarring, spreading the bacteria to other areas of the skin, and usually making the pimple look worse than it did before.

  1. Getting Too Stressed Out

Stress raises your cortisol levels, your glands pump out more oil, and your immune system is suppressed, which leads to acne breakouts. Manage your stress level to control your acne.

  1. Scrubbing Your Face

Scrubbing can pull away healthy skin cells and create an open wound and a higher risk for acne scarring.

  1. Smoking

Your smoking habit can cause skin irritation and dryness, which further aggravates acne formation on your skin.

  1. Dirty bed sheets and pillow covers

When your pillowcase isn't washed or changed regularly, a build-up of dirt and oil from the environment as well as your skin and hair touching the pillow is transferred back to your skin. This can clog pores and cause acne.
