What affects women’s fertility?

Female Infertility
August 14, 2019 , Last updated: August 1, 2024

Infertility is growing at an alarming pace. An estimated 60-80 million couples worldwide may have infertility problems. Unfortunately, in most cases, society blames women for infertility issues, though maximum cases of infertility are due to problems in the male partners. A woman suffers both emotional and physical abuse. Her family taunts her and curses her.

Thirty-year-old Neerja too had many such traumatic experiences of society blaming her for not being able to become a mother even after seven years of marriage. When she and her husband came to Dr Batra’s® for infertility treatment, Neerja mentioned that she had also tried IVF in the past without any success. This had left her feeling depressed. She feared that she would never be able to experience motherhood.

Most cases of infertility occur due to sexual dysfunction, which primarily occurs due to performance anxiety or in case of women due to hormonal imbalance or other manageable issues. Most often, and most unfortunately, even these manageable cases are referred for IVF. Shockingly, as several reports suggest, at least 7 per cent of all IVFs done in India are needless. On the contrary, proper insemination and timed intercourse can lead to natural conception. Before we discuss the safe and natural treatment options for women with infertility problems, let us understand the possible causes of infertility in women.

What affects women’s fertility?

Infertility is defined as trying to conceive for at least one year without success or for 6 months for women aged 35 and older. However, getting pregnant isn’t always as easy as ‘trying’. There are several roadblocks and complications that a woman might face, some of which she might have not even considered before deciding to become a mother.

So, what is it that causes female infertility? Though there are many reasons why you are unable to conceive, some of the common ones are:

  • Age:

Fertility in women starts to decline markedly between 35 and 39.
  • Excess weight:

Being overweight can reduce your chances of getting pregnant. 12% of all infertility cases are rooted in weight issues.
  • Hormonal imbalance:

Certain hormonal conditions like insulin resistance and PCOS can hamper your attempts to conceive. Around 30-40% of all cases of infertility in women are related to PCOS.
  • Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes:

When your fallopian tubes are damaged, they keep sperm away from getting to the egg or block the passage of the fertilized egg into the uterus.
  • Ovulation disorders:

Ovulation disorders are one of the common causes of infertility in women. This is when you ovulate infrequently or not at all. It is a cause of infertility in about 1 in 4 infertile couples.
  • Other factors:

Some other factors that may put you at risk of infertility are:
    • Smoking
    • Sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia & gonorrhea that can damage the fallopian tubes
    • Over consumption of alcohol.

Homeopathic infertility treatment

Homeopathy offers safe and effective infertility treatment for women. It takes a holistic, multi-factorial approach to find out the root cause of infertility and treat it. One of the clinical studies conducted in India, concluded that homeopathy manages female infertility effectively and naturally.

Some of the common homeopathic remedies advised for female infertility are:

1. Apis Mellifica is recommended for infertility due to polycystic ovaries.

2. Thyroidinum is a useful remedy for infertility due to hypothyroidism.

3. Oophorinum is useful for infertility due to poor quality of eggs.

4. For unexplained infertility where the cause is suspected to be some underlying stress, Natrum Mur is effective.

In Neerja’s case, although Neerja appeared strong on the surface with no visible weaknesses, deep inside, she felt terribly vulnerable and terrified of not being a mother. Based on her specific symptoms and temperament, we prescribed her the homeopathic medicine Natrum Muriaticum 200C. After just four months of homeopathic treatment, Neerja had good news for us - she was pregnant. This is a classic example of how homeopathy can resolve one’s emotional or physical issues and transform one’s life.

Self- help for better fertility chances

  • Maintain a normal weight:

Being overweight can reduce your chances of getting pregnant. Lose weight if you are overweight
  • Quit smoking:

Tobacco has multiple negative effects on fertility. So, quit smoking if you are looking at getting pregnant.
  • Avoid alcohol:

Heavy alcohol consumption may lead to decreased fertility. Also, alcohol can affect the health of a developing fetus. If you're planning to become pregnant, avoid alcohol, and don't drink alcohol while you're pregnant.
  • Reduce stress:

Some studies have shown that couples experiencing psychological stress had poor results with infertility treatment. If you can, find a way to reduce stress before trying to become pregnant.
  • Live healthy lifestyle:

Exercise, meditation, good sleep & eating healthy are mandatory requirements to help one get pregnant. Follow a healthy lifestyle to increase your chances of pregnancy.
