Demystifying the myths of allergies

A runny nose, sneezing or itchy eyes, all indicate the start of the allergy season. From allergies being harmless to outgrowing your reaction to allergens, myths about allergies are very common. Allergies can cause discomfort and also affect your daily life. The allergic triggers and symptoms can differ from person to person. Therefore,   understanding your allergic triggers can help you be aware and better manage the symptoms.

Here are a few facts that can help keep your allergies under control –

Myth 1: Allergies are harmless.

When left untreated, allergies can have a significant impact on the quality of life of the individual. If you have a chronic respiratory disorder such as asthma or a skin disorder such as eczema, an untreated allergy can worsen your condition. Some food allergies can also trigger a life-threatening reaction.

Myth 2: You cannot inherit allergies.

You might be blaming your surroundings for the cause of your allergies or for making you more vulnerable to such situations. But, think again, maybe it is your genes that might be responsible for those allergic reactions. According to research, people inherit the tendency to be allergic, although not to a particular allergen. If you or your partner suffer from an allergy, your child is more likely to suffer from anallergy too.

Myth 3: You can outgrow allergies.

As we age, our immune system weakens and so does our response to allergens. The chances of outgrowing an allergy depend primarily on the type of allergy and how severe it is. The good news is that certain food allergies that develop in children fade away with age. However, it is best to manage allergies with safe treatment.

Myth 4: Pets cause allergies.

This is a very common misconception. However, the problem is not with the pet but with your immune system. If you have an over-sensitive immune system, it can react to harmless proteins found in the pet's urine, saliva or dander (dead skin cells). This results in an allergic reaction that needs to be addressed.

Myth 5: Stress does not affect allergies.

Stress has been an inevitable part of our lives and avoiding it can be really challenging. But, it is very important to consider that stress can deteriorate your allergy symptoms. It is best to adopt stress reduction techniques such as sleep, exercise and a healthy diet to avoid your allergy flares.

Lastly, being in control of your condition necessitates being aware of the truth, which will definitely empower you to cope with allergies in the best possible way.

Clinical Studies

In a double-blind study, 34 people were diagnosed with moderate to severe seasonal allergic rhinitis. The participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo (dummy pill) or a homeopathic remedy. The study was conducted over a period of four weeks to test the homeopathic remedy and placebo. The result showed that homeopathy gave significant positive change when compared to a placebo.

Homeopathic Treatment for Allergies

Homeopathy can help you treat allergies with natural and safe medicines. Homeopathic remedies target the body’s immune system, which helps to reduce hypersensitivity to allergens. In the long run, with homeopathic treatment, patients will experience less aggression to allergens. It also gradually helps to treat hypersensitivity.

Homeopathy is based on the principle of ‘like cures like.’ Homeopathic treatment administers minute doses of a suitable remedy that would in a healthy person produce symptoms ‘similar’ to that of the allergic response. This helps to gradually desensitize the individual’s immune response to the allergen. For example, when you chop onions, you get a runny nose, watery eyes or sneezing. Therefore, to help you overcome similar nasal allergy symptoms such as runny nose, a homeopathic medicine which is made from red onions is used.

In other words, whether you suffer from nasal allergy or its accompanying problems, to get rid of the problem from the root, homeopathic treatment provides you with a ‘similar’ remedy. This is done in minute doses to help calm down the overactive immune system.

  • Clean your bed-sheets, pillow covers and blankets regularly with hot water.
  • Always use a dampened cloth while dusting. Dry dusting tends to propel dust mites and allergens into the air.
  • Avoid exposure to common triggers, such as paints, chemicals or tobacco smokeas they are likely to cause of nasal allergies.
  • Carefully read food, cosmetics and other labels to avoid substances that can cause you allergies.

Include immunity-boosting food such as probiotics, dark chocolate, turmeric, oily fish or broccoli.
