We all have been in situations in which we have held ourselves from rushing to the toilet - while sitting in a meeting for hours, or travelling to a remote area in the bus, or during last minute exam pressure. But no matter what, we have held in and conducted ourselves in the situation as required. But imagine someone who experiences involuntary urine leakage before reaching the toilet! This condition is called Urinary Incontinence (UI).

It is more common in women than in men. Its symptoms may differ from person to person and the treatment options range from medications to even surgery. But if you are looking for a safe and holistic solution, you can avail urinary incontinence treatment in homeopathy. To consult our expert homeopathic doctors, you can book an appointment online.

How long can you hold your pee? How much is okay?

During the day, most people need to urinate every 3 to 4 hours. Just how long you can comfortably hold your pee differs for everyone. If you aren’t staying hydrated, or if you’re losing fluids through perspiration, you may be able to hold in your urine for quite some time.

At night, most people under age 50 are able to hold urine for about eight hours. As you get older, you may find yourself getting up to make 2 to 4 bathroom trips. But sometimes, your bladder may start overreacting, despite your young age and gender, and you may have an urge to pee often. Sometimes, waiting to go to the toilet is unavoidable and that’s okay. But, if you’re feeling pain or discomfort, you get an overwhelming urge to cross your legs to keep from peeing, or feel intense pain in the lower back or abdomen – there is something serious; which is called urinary incontinence.

Types of Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence
  • Stress urinary incontinence is when urine leaks because of sudden pressure on your lower stomach muscles, such as when you cough, sneeze, laugh, rise from a chair, lift something, or exercise. Stress urinary incontinence usually occurs when the pelvic muscles are weakened, sometimes by childbirth, or by prostate or other pelvic surgery.
  • Urge incontinence is when the need to urinate comes on too fast, before you can get to the toilet. Your body may only give you a warning of a few seconds or minutes before you urinate. Urge incontinence is most common in the elderly and may be a sign of an infection in the kidneys or bladder.
  • Overflow incontinence is when you have constant dribbling of urine. It’s caused by an overfilled bladder. You may feel like you can’t empty your bladder all the way and you may strain when urinating. This often occurs in men and can be caused by blockage of the urinary flow, such as an enlarged prostate gland or tumour. Diabetes or certain medicines may also cause the problem.
  • Neurogenic incontinence occurs when your nervous system affects the bladder and urine function. You may feel that your bladder has become either overactive or underactive. Common conditions which can cause this type of incontinence are stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer’s disease, and cerebral palsy.

Urinary Incontinence Causes

Urinary incontinence can be caused by different medical conditions including bladder stones, urinary tract infections (UTI), diabetes, uterus surgery/removal, prostate enlargement and constipation. Other common urinary incontinence causes are obesity, menopause, childbirth, stress, anlouixiety, heavy caffeine or alcohol consumption, heart and blood pressure medications, sedatives, and muscle relaxants.

If left untreated, urinary incontinence can lead to recurrent urinary tract infection. It can also hamper the patient psychologically. It can affect the personal as well as professional life of an individual. The good news is that you can treat it with homeopathy, safely and effectively.

Urinary Incontinence Treatment in Homeopathy

There are several treatments available for Urinary Incontinence. Bladder training is the main line of treatment in alternative medicine. It consists of training the bladder to hold the urine for at least 10 minutes after the urge. In cases that do not respond well to behavioral training and exercises, medications and surgical procedures are prescribed in such cases. They may correct the physical symptoms of urinary incontinence but do not address the root cause. Hence, if you want an effective, safe, and natural solution, take urinary incontinence treatment in homeopathy.

Homeopathy is known to treat the root cause of urinary incontinence, that too without any side-effects. Homeopathic doctors take an integrated approach to treat urinary incontinence based on its causative factors, type and severity, and then prescribe a customized homeopathic treatment plan. It also takes care of the psychological damages caused by this condition.

With the right combination of suggested homeopathic remedies, counseling, exercise, and a few lifestyle changes, you will be able to see the following results in your condition:

  • reduced tendency to get infections
  • improved bladder control
  • reduced stress
  • reduced fear of public embarrassment
  • improved quality of life

Manisha's Story of overcoming Incontinence with Homeopathy

"It was in my late 30s, after the birth of my first child, I realized that I am losing control on my bladder. I had to run straight to the toilet, I cannot hold it back even for 5-10 minutes. I consulted a doctor. He told me that it is usual to happen after delivery. The muscles get stretched and weak but could be exercised back to full strength. I started exercising but it wasn’t helping me much. I was still changing 3 incontinence pads in a day. I stopped travelling long distances and meeting people. Then I consulted a homeopath and started taking the treatment. The doctor took my case in detail and asked several questions. Besides taking the medicines, I religiously followed his advice over lifestyle and exercise. Within a span of 4 months, I regained control over my bladder again. I was able to control the urge till the time I reach the toilet and could travel without any fear of peeing in my pants. Thanks to homeopathy."

Self Help Tips
  • Maintain a healthy weight as excess body fat strains the pelvic floor muscles.
  • Practice pelvic floor exercises, especially during pregnancy.
  • Avoid bladder irritants, such as caffeine and acidic foods.
  • Eat more fiber, which can prevent constipation, a cause of urinary incontinence.
