How to manage acne during summer?

Acne happens to be one of the most common and yet challenging skin issues for many of us. And this issue gets worse by the time summer rolls around. With all the summer fun, comes excessive sweating and exposure to ultraviolet rays. Sun exposure during the summer months may make your acne scar appear darker and lasts longer.

When the weather is hot and humid, people tend to sweat significantly more. This causes sweat and dust to settle on the body and create a ‘perfect environment’ for pores to clog. And this leads acne-causing bacteria to grow.

Acne complications

  • Scars:

Acne scars and thick scars (keloids) can remain for a long time after acne has healed.

  • Skin changes:

After acne has cleared, the affected skin may get darker (hyperpigmented) or lighter (hypopigmented) than before the condition occurred.

Humidity and high temperature can cause oil glands to work overtime. Although you can't halt your oil glands from producing oil, there are things you can do to control excess oil.

Skincare tips for summer

  • Do not touch! :

Touching acne is an unfortunate reflex that can cause secondary infections and a mark or scar later on. Chances of acne flare-up can be minimized by not touching your face with dirty or sweaty hands and, always removing your makeup before working out.

  • Tailor your skincare routine:

Swap out thick and heavy moisturizers for lightweight lotions and serums. When it comes to skincare, less is more in the summer for everything — except for SPF. Also, acne can get worse from chlorine and saltwater, so always remember to moisturize your skin before and after swimming.

  • Say no to oil-based makeup:

The excessive use of oil-based makeup leads to clogged skin pores. The bacteria formed because of these clogged pores lead to the formation of acne. Hence it is suggested to wear water-based makeup when going out or to wear as little makeup as possible. Trust us, your skin will thank you for that extra care.

  • Clean your skin:

If you have acne on your face, the most basic step is to clean your face with an anti-acne foaming cleanser twice daily. If your skin gets excessively sweaty or oily, you can add a third round of cleaning.

But don't get into the habit of washing your face too many times. Cleaning too often can break down the skin's protective barrier, causing excessive dryness and irritation and ultimately worse breakouts.

  • Take showers:

Sweat can irritate acne. Take a shower immediately after working out, or anytime you've been sweating.

Use a mild body wash or soap that contains salicylic acid to avoid skin breakouts.

  • Prevent dehydration:

When the body is dehydrated, it doesn't function effectively. This can lead to a wide range of skin concerns, especially acne breakouts. To avoid the effects of dehydration, make sure you drink at least 7-8 glasses of water every day.

But what about acne scars?

No matter the season, the risk of acne scarring the skin as dark spots are all too real. But the chances of it spike in summer as the sun causes the red marks of acne to darken. Be extra vigilant and slather on a non-comedogenic sunscreen every two hours to ensure that existing marks don't get darker.

Homeopathy treatment for acne

Acne can be triggered by multiple factors such as hormones, climate, food, stress and an irregular lifestyle. Homeopathy offers long-term relief from acne problems. This is because homeopathic medicines target the root cause or triggering factors of acne rather than suppressing it.
