Have you always been active during your college years and played almost all the sports? But, now you feel some tenderness and pain in your knees and it restricts your mobility.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Knee pain is the common musculoskeletal problem that brings people to doctor’s clinic.

Popularly known as osteoarthritis, this knee problem occurs in 22% to 39% of the population in India (According to National Health Portal of India).

What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis also known as ‘wear-and-tear arthritis’ is a condition which results in deterioration of the natural cushioning between the joints and cartilage. A patient suffering from osteoarthritis will experience extreme pain and swelling that result from constant rubbing of joint bones.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. While it can occur even in young adults, the chance of developing osteoarthritis after age 45 is high. According to the Arthritis Foundation, women are more likely to have osteoarthritis than men.

What is Knee Osteoarthritis?

Suffering from a long-lasting knee pain could possibly be a case of knee osteoarthritis.  Knee osteoarthritis is a degeneration of the knee’s articular cartilage which is a flexible and slippery material that normally protects bones from joint friction and impact. The condition also involves changes to the bone underneath the cartilage.

Cause of osteoarthritis

Aging is an inevitable process of life. It invites all kinds of diseases, of them osteoarthritis is common. However, several other factors are responsible for developing arthritis such as:

  • Weight.

Weight increases pressure on the knees. Every kilogram of weight you gain adds 6 to 8 kilograms of extra weight on your knees.
  • Heredity.

This includes genetic mutations and inherited abnormalities that make a person more likely to suffer from osteoarthritis.
  • Gender.

Women ages 55 and older are more likely than men to develop osteoarthritis of the knee.
  • Repetitive stress injuries.

Due to certain occupations that involve long hours of stress to the joint or even athletics such as kneeling, squatting, or lifting heavy weights are more likely to develop osteoarthritis of the knee.
  • Other illnesses.

People with rheumatoid arthritis or even hormonal imbalance are at a higher risk of suffering osteoarthritis.

Stages of osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis develops in stages. Therefore, it’s difficult to detect osteoarthritis symptoms as they appear in advanced stages.

Stage 1: Minor: Small lumps may cause slight damage to the cartilage

Stage 2: Mild: Tissues harden and may experience stiffness or joint pain

Stage 3: Moderate: Cartilage will continue to break down resulting in inflamed tissues that produce extra synovial fluid leading to increase in swelling

Stage 4: Severe: Development of bone lumps; extreme/intense pain during simple activities, such as walking
