Like every coin has two sides, the monsoon also hosts two different sets of experiences. One set deals with the green land and pleasant weather you enjoy and the other set involves a barrage of skin allergies that can be downright uncomfortable. Other than excessive humidity, it’s also the time when fungal infections show up in full force. Most of these problems are not life-threatening but the unwillingness to visit a dermatologist, can raise the severity of the condition.

Common skin problems synonymous with the monsoon:

The onset of the monsoons may not be at all welcoming for the skin. With an increase in the humidity levels, skin rashes, fungal infections, ringworms, and skin irritations become inevitable. Mentioned below are some of the skin problems that often affect people during the monsoons:

  • Scabies:

Scabies is an infection caused by a mite, which causes intense itching mainly at night. It is very common in children who contract it from other infected children at school or in kindergarten. As soon as one member of the family gets infected, it can easily spread to the other family members who have a history of skin problems.

You can prevent and control the condition from spreading by washing your clothes and linens in hot water with antiseptic agents.

  • Athlete’s foot:

It is one of the most common infections in the monsoons. It occurs due to increased moisture retention or sweat in wet shoes and socks. Your feet may show scaling and peeling of the skin along with itching.

To prevent athlete’s foot, avoid closed footwear, make sure to wash and dry your feet completely especially after coming home from outside, and use an antifungal powder to keep sweating under control.

  • Ringworm:

It is a fungal infection that resembles red rings which can cause itching. Ringworm requires proper treatment with oral or topical medications. Do not self-medicate if you are diagnosed with ringworm and consult a dermatologist.

  • Rashes:

Monsoons bring with them a lot of different rashes due to an increase of allergens in the hair as a result of increased humidity and a decrease in temperature.

These rashes are common in people suffering from recurring allergies like sneezing episodes or rhinitis.

Useful steps to avoid skin problems during the monsoon:

The following tips can go a long way to ward off annoying skin allergies.

  • Practice good personal hygiene. Keep yourself and your clothes clean.
  • Keep yourself dry. Avoid staying in wet clothes for too long.
  • As some skin problems are contagious, avoid sharing clothes and personal items with others.
  • Your diet can also play a crucial role to minimize the incidences of skin allergies. Avoid hot and spicy food. Instead, opt for more fruits, vegetables, yogurt, almonds, garlic, brown rice and oats, to name a few.
  • Keep your body well hydrated. Sip water (preferably boiled or purified) at regular intervals.

Not all cases of skin allergies can be managed solely through prevention and home remedies. We suggest consulting with a dermatologist if you experience significant discomfort and believe medical intervention may be needed.

Homeopathy for skin allergy

Homeopathy is a gentle and natural treatment for skin allergies. It offers long-term relief from all types of skin problems. This is because homeopathic medicines target the root cause or triggering factors of the allergy rather than suppressing it.

A homeopath will consider the patient’s personality, lifestyle, hereditary factors, and history of skin allergy before selecting homeopathic medicines. This will help to treat the causative factors of the skin problem with no side effects.

Homeopathic remedies are natural and safe for all age groups and even during pregnancy or lactation. These medicines are highly beneficial for those who have sensitive skin and where conventional medicines are not as effective or cause side effects. Skin allergies, especially on the face; that is challenging to treat in general practice can be treated with homeopathic medicines without causing any side effects. Homeopathic medicines such as Calcarea Carbonica, Rhus Toxicodendron, Bacillinum, and Natrum Muriaticum have shown effective results in treating skin allergies.

According to a case study published by the International Journal of Health Sciences and Research, a 52-year-old woman suffered from a fungal infection. She had complaints of burning & itching in the neck region for 2-3 days, intensely burning ringworm, physical restlessness, and aggravation during sleep. She was treated with Rhus Toxicodendron, a homeopathic remedy. Within 8 days, the lesions disappeared and the sleeping pattern improved. No relapse or adverse event was noted.
