Female Infertility
July 6, 2019 , Last updated: October 7, 2024

Who wouldn’t love hearing someone calling you “Mom...” with full of love and passion? Undoubtedly, it is definitely the most special feeling in this whole world. But there comes the villain of the story – female infertility! Infertility is when you have tried to get pregnant with frequent intercourse for at least a year with no success. Female infertilitycauses can be difficult to diagnose. The core indication of infertility is the inability to get pregnant. A menstrual cycle that’s too long like 35 days or more, too short like less than 21 days, irregular or absent can mean that you’re not ovulating.

Causes

Female infertilityis caused by one or more of the factors mentioned below.

  • Ovulation disorders: Problems with the regulation of reproductive hormones by the pituitary gland, or problems in the ovary, can cause ovulation disorders, meaning you ovulate infrequently or not at all!
  • Damage to fallopian tubes: Damaged or blocked fallopian tube damage or blockage can include pelvic inflammatory disease, previous surgery in the abdomen or pelvis, and pelvic tuberculosis.
  • Endometriosis: It occurs when tissue that normally grows in the uterus implants and grows in other locations. This extra tissue growth can cause scarring, which may block fallopian tubes and keep an egg and sperm from uniting.Even the surgical removal of the same can cause scarring. Itcan also upset the lining of the uterus, disrupting implantation of the fertilized egg. The condition also seems to affect fertility in less-direct ways like damage to the sperm or egg.

Risk factors

Certain factors can put you at higher risk of female infertility, including:

  • Age: The quality and quantity of a woman's eggs begin weakening with increasing age. In the mid-30s, the rate of follicle loss speeds, resulting in fewer and poorer quality eggs.
  • Weight: Being overweight or considerably underweight can affect normal ovulation. Getting to a healthy body mass index (BMI) may increase the frequency of ovulation and the likelihood of pregnancy.
  • Sexual history: Sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea can damage the fallopian tubes. If you’re having unprotected intercourse with multiple partners, it increases your risk of a sexually transmitted infection that may cause fertility problems later.
  • Smoking: Besides damaging your cervix and fallopian tubes, smoking increases your risk of miscarriage and pregnancy. Stop smoking before beginningfemaleinfertility treatment.

Prevention

You can improve your chances of having normal fertility if you:

  • Maintain normal weight: Overweight and underweight women are at increased risk of ovulation disorders. If you need to lose weight, exercise moderately. Extreme exercise of more than five hours a week has been associated with reduced ovulation.
  • Quit smoking: Tobacco has multiple negative effects on fertility, not to mention your general health and the health of a foetus. If you’re a smoker and considering pregnancy, quit it right away!
  • Avoid alcohol: Heavy alcohol use may lead to female infertility. And any alcohol use can affect the health of a developing foetus. If you’re planning to become pregnant, avoid alcohol. And don’t drink alcohol while you’re pregnant.
  • Reduce stress: Women experiencing psychological stress have poorer results with infertility treatment. Try and find a way to reduce stress in your life before trying to become pregnant.
