PCOS: A disorder with many faces
As a young woman of 13, Shriya’s period began as expected. Around the same time, her skin began to break out terribly, particularly along her jawline and on her back. Her periods were always irregular, arriving at their leisure (usually about two months apart), bringing with them intense cramps and heavy bleeding. Over time, she developed coarse hair on her chin. This was a great source of distress. She spent many hours trying different hair removal techniques and attempting to find treatments for her acne, none of which were particularly effective. She met a gynecologist who diagnosed her condition as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
Shriya immediately googled ‘PCOS’, to find out more about the condition that had caused her so much difficulty. What she found was a great deal of confusing information. She found a different description for women with ovary cyst and she wondered why her case is so different from other women who had the same diagnosis. Her ultrasound did not show any cysts, and she was a very slim woman.
Esha, on the other hand, had been diagnosed with PCOS at a young age. She had always struggled with her weight. She averaged two periods a year. She had to take a course of prescription for her monthly menstruation. She had many ultrasounds of her ovaries, and they were always full of small, round ovary cyst. She got married to a wonderful man when she was 32, and they desperately wanted to start a family together but things were just not going their way. Together, they began an intense battle with infertility that had been going on for the past 2 years. She felt consumed by the “project” of getting pregnant.

So, if you have PCOS too, don’t be surprised by its different signs and symptoms. PCOS is a disorder with many faces and can affect hormones, fertility, skin, cardiovascular health, and metabolism. PCOS is called a syndrome, rather than a disease, as there is a wide range of ways that PCOS can present and a variety of factors that affect it.
PCOS can be expressed in women with excessive androgenic hormones like testosterone, producing acne and hair growth as we’ve seen in Shriya’s case. Or it can present similarly to Esha’s case, with abdominal weight gain, infertility, and loss of ovulation and menstrual cycles. Click here to know more about symptoms of PCOS
That is why women with PCOS need individualized treatment as per their needs to get the maximum benefit out of it.
