The onset of the monsoon is a welcome relief from the sweltering heat, but don't be surprised if your skin and hair don't share your enthusiasm. The bright, sweat-inducing sun has now given way to gloomy skies and high levels of humidity. This humidity spells disaster for our hair and also has the potential to wreak havoc on our skin, making even the most perfect makeovers go haywire during these days.

Hair Care

The monsoons often usher in hair care problems such as stickiness, greasiness, dandruff, and hair loss, which are the major problems observed. The increased moisture content in the air makes the hair look dull and flat, as a result of which the tresses look limp. The chlorine content in water, which is also and follow it up by a conditioner as soon as very high during the monsoons, bleaches and you get drenched in the rain. This helps to damages your hair.

Taking a little care could keep hair raising trouble at a bay. It may seem like a pointless ritual to set, style, or reinvent hairstyles during the wet season.

  • To avoid a flat, damp or frizzy look, conditioning the hair and then tying a neat ponytail is a favorable solution as the hair tends to tangle easily in the rainy season.
  • A therapeutic and rejuvenating scalp massage will help to revitalize those damp roots.
  • Use a scarf to protect your hair from the winds and adverse weather conditions.
  • Oil your hair at least once or twice a week.
  • Wash your hair at least thrice a week with lukewarm water.
  • Do not use lathering shampoos as they tend to dry and roughen your hair in this season. Use only mild or herbal shampoos.
  • Use only thin towels for drying your hair.
  • Avoid getting wet as high humidity can damage your hair leading to hair fall.
  • Wash your hair immediately with a mild shampoo and follow it up by a conditioner as soon as you get drenched in the rain. This helps to keep the scalp free of germs.

If you tend to suffer from dandruff and fungal infections, use an antidandruff shampoo. Homeopathic medicines can be taken to treat dry, scaly dandruff and yellow, sticky dandruff, respectively. If the dandruff persists in spite of using an antidandruff shampoo and taking the indicated medicines, consult a doctor. Never use hair dryers and styling gels. Let your hair dry naturally. If you must use a hair dryer, hold it at least 6-8 inches away from your scalp. Use a wide-toothed comb to brush your hair.

Skin Care

The skin also carries a gloomy look and tends to shrink and wrinkle up due to prolonged exposure to the rainwater. Acne problems increase and intermediate periods of exposure to the sunlight can lead to tanning of the skin. Along with all this, one of the major concerns is the tendency to develop fungal infections, especially in the body folds.

Following a few simple tips will help you get around these problems.

  • Follow the cardinal rule of cleansing, toning and moisturizing your skin because improper skin care can lead to clogging of the skin pores, making it more prone to acne, fungal infections, and allergies.
  • Fungal infections of the nails and toes are common; therefore, keep them clean to avoid such problems.
  • Stay away from harsh sunlight and make it mandatory to use a water-based sunscreen lotion with an SPF of 15-30. Reapply it every 3 to 4 hours.
  • Avoid heavy makeup. Preferably use water resistant products.
